John Carmack on focus:
"Focus is a matter of deciding what things you're not going to do."
"Focused, hard work is the real key to success. Keep your eyes on the goal, and just keep taking the next step towards completing it. If you aren't sure which way to do something, do it both ways and see which works better."
I'm not sure where these quotes came from. I found them on a "John Carmack quotes" page.
I'm always inspired by John Carmack. He's a diligent programmer with a lot of earned respect in not just the game programming community, but even the gaming community. His relentless drive to work hard has been a quality I've tried to emulate since learning about him. In addition, he's one of the few programmers I know of whose "quotes" pages are actually filled with useful wisdom and not just funny coding quirks.
Focus on his two quotes above. There is a lot of wisdom there, and it's coming from a programmer. Whenever I get ideas about starting a new project, I keep reminding myself of the first quote. By choosing to do something, I've chosen to not do others.
Focus is merely a conscious choice to keep deciding not to do other things.
